When to Go
Sri Lanka is an all-year destination, so there really is no bad time to visit. However, the peak tourist season is December through April. In terms of weather, this is the best time to visit the western and southern coasts as well as the hill country. The best weather on the east coast is from April through September. If you plan to visit Sri Lanka for the holidays, plan as far as possible in advance and be prepared for the highest prices of the year.
Gay Life in Sri Lanka
The percentage of Sri Lankans who self-identify as gay or lesbian is probably just about the same as it is in the rest of the world. Sri Lanka is predominantly Buddhist, which is customary very tolerant. As time passes and Sri Lanka becomes more contemporary, younger people are becoming more open. However, "gay" is not yet a lifestyle in Sri Lana, although that is also changing as younger people find themselves increasingly in open, committed relationships. LGBTQ visitors feel comfortable in Sri Lanka because most people are non-judgmental Buddhists, to whom someone else's private life is of little interest.
There are restaurants and other venues that are popular with local gays in Colombo, Negombo, Kandy and Galle, but these are all mixed. We're still waiting for the advent of gay bars, saunas, discos and other venues specificly for LGBTQ customers. They will appear sooner or later.
Passports & Visas
A visa is required for citizens of most countries. Visas are issued on arrival, although you can also get one in advance. for more information read our Visas page.
