Gay Travel to Sri Lanka

Gay Travel Sri Lanka with Private Guides

A great teardrop in the Indian Ocean. Mountain-top plantations that supplied enough tea for all of England. Antique trains carrying passengers past incomparable scenery. Endless white beaches. Spices enjoyed around the world. Buddhist pilgrims, temples and relics. British Victoriana. Herds of elephants. Fishermen on stilts. Ancient fortresses with cannons on their ramparts. A shopping and dining paradise. All of these and more are what makes Sri Lanka so incredibly exciting.

After years of civil unrest, Sri Lanka is finally at peace. Their tourism infrastructure lagged but is catching up to international first-world standards. Sri Lanka is open for business and is ready to welcome you and other LGBTQ visitors with warm hospitality, adventure and stunning natural beauty, including some of the world's premier national parks, where you can see herds of wild elephants other big game. There are also religious festivals, whale watching, outdoor adventure activities like bike tours, and endless food.

Only hours from Delhi, Bangkok and Singapore, this once-British island nation has dazzling things for just about everyone. There is more to Sri Lanka than Colombo and Negombo. Other destinations get more attention from us for their unspoiled beauty and their history. How about a big game safari in Yala National Park, or a ride on the world's most scenic railroad? Fancy trying your hand at picking tea on a hillside plantation? Or how about some spa time at a luxury beach-side resort. While Purple Dragon Pioneered are Asia's gay travel pioneers, anyone can join our trips. Every tour is as different as the customers who enjoy them.

All of our Sri Lanka programs are custom made for our guests, depending on their interests and how much time they have to spend there. Average stays are eight to twelve days. However, we have suggested itineraries lasting from five to fifteen nights, and longer. Prices depend on the kinds of hotels you choose. Sorry, but we do not offer sightseeing unless we are also providing your hotels.

When to Go

Sri Lanka is an all-year destination, so there really is no bad time to visit. However, the peak tourist season is December through April. In terms of weather, this is the best time to visit the western and southern coasts as well as the hill country. The best weather on the east coast is from April through September. If you plan to visit Sri Lanka for the holidays, plan as far as possible in advance and be prepared for the highest prices of the year.

Gay Life in Sri Lanka

The percentage of Sri Lankans who self-identify as gay or lesbian is probably just about the same as it is in the rest of the world. Sri Lanka is predominantly Buddhist, which is customary very tolerant. As time passes and Sri Lanka becomes more contemporary, younger people are becoming more open. However, "gay" is not yet a lifestyle in Sri Lanka, although that is also changing as younger people find themselves increasingly in open, committed relationships. LGBTQ visitors feel comfortable in Sri Lanka because most Sri Lankans are non-judgmental Buddhists, to whom someone else's private life is of little interest.

There are restaurants and other venues that are popular with local gays in Colombo, Negombo, Kandy and Galle, but these are all mixed. We're still waiting for the advent of gay bars, saunas, discos and other venues specifically for LGBTQ customers. They will appear sooner or later.

Purple Dragon pioneered LGBTQ travel to Asia, but everyone is welcome on our tours!
